9th Grade
Freshman English
Freshman English emphasizes reading and following directions. Vocabulary study will be emphasized along with library and study skills. Students will also develop paragraphing and letter-writing skills through the use of several methods. Literature appreciation, critical thinking, and cooperative learning will also be stressed.
Advanced Freshman English
This course is for students with well-developed eighth grade English grammar, composition and reading skills. Composition and literature will be combined. Students should be self-motivated, college-bound high achievers.
10th Grade
Sophomore English
This course emphasizes grammar usage, vocabulary, and dictionary use. English literature is a part of this course.
Advanced Sophomore English
This course includes language, literature, and composition. Composition is usually in response to the survey study of world literature and stresses paragraphing, outlining, vocabulary, a researched essay, and creative writing. This integrated approach to writing and reading is designed specifically for high achievers.
11th Grade
Junior English
This course combines a survey of American literature and writing experiences in response to literary selections. Emphasis is placed on improving grammar skills and reading with a purpose.
Advanced Junior English
This course is designed for college-bound juniors and involves written analytical responses to selected works of major American authors. Students should have adequate command of basic grammar skills and should be proficient in reading. One documented essay is required.
12th Grade
Senior English
This course is designed to aid students in improving grammar, research, and composition skills. Students will read and respond to selections from English literature. One documented essay is required.
Advanced Senior English
This course is designed for college-bound seniors and includes a survey of English literature, the research process, and composition as preparation for college writing. One major research paper is required.
*Advanced Placement Literature and Composition
AP English is a college-level English class that often takes more time, requires more work, and gives greater opportunity for individual accomplishments than a regular high school English class. At the conclusion of the course, successful students will be able to write a lucid essay in a timed-writing situation on an unfamiliar piece of literature and interpret it perceptively. He/she will also have a repertoire of selected novels and dramas from world literature upon which to draw answers to essay questions on the Advanced Placement Examination in English as well as the objective portion of the test.
English Electives
Yearbook
This class will consist of a staff of no more than 20 students who will be responsible for the production of the yearbook. They will be expected to work independently and carry out assignments responsibly. They will also be required to assist in various school service projects. Interested students need to apply with the yearbook sponsor before completion of registration. Only those students who have written permission from the sponsor may register for this course.
*Speech
Elements of communication, interpersonal and group communication, as well as, preparing for public speaking are taught. Types of public speaking, debate, and parliamentary procedures are also taught. All students must participate in class discussions and give speeches.
*Drama
In this course students will participate in individual and or group pantomimes, improvisations, scenes, extemporaneous talks, discussion, and play performances. Students will be involved in the careful preparation, planning, organizing, and rehearsing for class and school presentation.
